The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine (Book Review)

On this Women’s Day, I thought of writing on a book I read recently, The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine. She is also the author of The Male Brain, which explores similar themes from the perspective of male neurological development. Given ongoing discussions about gender, equality, and neuroscience, it felt timely to critically engage with this work and assess its relevance in light of Catholic teaching on gender.

Brizendine’s The Female Brain (2006) explores how hormones and brain chemistry shape women’s behaviors, emotions, and cognition. While it was widely popular upon release, its reception has been mixed, especially regarding its portrayal of biological differences.

Strengths: Affirming the God-Given Differences Between Men and Women
The book provides valuable insights into how hormonal fluctuations affect women's lives, from puberty to menopause. Brizendine highlights the role of estrogen and oxytocin in emotional bonding and decision-making, contributing to a greater awareness of female-specific neurological experiences. From a Catholic perspective, this aligns with the understanding that men and women are created with distinct but complementary roles, as affirmed in Male and Female He Created Them (2019). Recognizing these differences helps promote a culture that respects women's unique gifts in family, society, and the Church.

Weaknesses: Oversimplification and Biological Determinism
Despite its contributions, the book at times presents an overly deterministic view of gender differences, suggesting that women are naturally more emotional and men more rational. While Catholic teaching affirms the complementarity of the sexes, it also upholds human dignity, reason, and free will, recognizing that personal development is shaped by more than just biology. Overemphasizing biological determinism risks reducing human identity to neurochemistry rather than seeing it in the fullness of God’s design.

Relevance to Women’s Issues Today
In an era when gender theory seeks to erase distinctions between male and female, The Female Brain serves as a reminder of the natural differences that the Church defends. However, these differences must not be used to justify inequality but to celebrate the dignity of both sexes as created by God.
While The Female Brain introduces important discussions on women’s health, its deterministic approach must be balanced with the Catholic understanding of gender. Readers should engage with it critically, affirming the biological differences God has created while rejecting reductionist views that diminish human dignity and free will.

Antiqua et Nova

Antiqua et Nova: Note on the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence is a magisterial document issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education on 28 January 2025. It reflects on the ethical and anthropological implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) from a Catholic perspective. The document is rooted in the Church's philosophical and theological tradition, emphasizing the dignity of the human person, the responsible use of technology, and the promotion of the common good. It addresses the rapid advancements in AI, which have raised significant questions about human identity, ethical responsibility, and the future of society.
The Church views AI as a powerful tool that can either enhance human flourishing or pose serious risks if misused. The document calls for a balanced approach, encouraging the development of AI in ways that respect human dignity, promote justice, and foster integral human development. It also warns against the dangers of reducing human intelligence to mere functionality, as AI does, and stresses the importance of maintaining a human-centred approach to technology.

Summary of the Document
I. Introduction
The document begins by situating the discussion of AI within the broader context of human intelligence as a gift from God. It highlights the Church's support for scientific and technological advancements, provided they are used responsibly to steward creation and promote the common good. The introduction raises concerns about AI's potential to imitate human intelligence, generate new content, and make autonomous decisions, which could lead to ethical dilemmas and a crisis of truth in public discourse.

II. What is Artificial Intelligence?
This section provides a historical overview of AI, tracing its origins to the 1956 Dartmouth workshop and its subsequent evolution. It distinguishes between "narrow AI," which is designed for specific tasks, and the aspirational goal of "Artificial General Intelligence" (AGI), which would match or surpass human cognitive abilities. The document critiques the functionalist perspective that equates human intelligence with AI, emphasizing that human intelligence encompasses more than just task performance—it includes creativity, emotions, moral discernment, and relationality.

III. Intelligence in the Philosophical and Theological Tradition
The document explores the Christian understanding of human intelligence, rooted in the philosophical and theological tradition. It discusses the concepts of rationality, embodiment, and relationality, emphasizing that human intelligence is not merely functional but is deeply connected to the person's spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions. The Church's view of intelligence is holistic, integrating reason, will, and the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.

IV. The Role of Ethics in Guiding the Development and Use of AI
This section underscores the importance of ethical responsibility in the development and use of AI. It stresses that while AI can be a powerful tool for human progress, it must always be directed toward the common good and respect for human dignity. The document warns against the misuse of AI for harmful purposes, such as surveillance, manipulation, or the erosion of human agency. It calls for transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights in the design and deployment of AI systems.

V. Specific Questions
The document addresses several practical areas where AI poses ethical challenges:
AI and Society: AI has the potential to promote integral human development but also risks exacerbating inequality and social fragmentation.
AI and Human Relationships: While AI can facilitate connections, it cannot replace authentic human relationships, which are essential for personal growth and community building.
AI, the Economy, and Labor: AI can enhance productivity but may also lead to job displacement and the devaluation of human labor. The document calls for policies that protect workers and ensure that AI complements rather than replaces human work.
AI and Healthcare: AI can improve medical diagnostics and treatment but must not replace the human relationship between patients and healthcare providers.
AI and Education: AI can enhance learning but should not replace the role of teachers in fostering critical thinking and moral formation.
AI, Misinformation, Deepfakes, and Abuse: The document warns against the use of AI to spread false information or manipulate public opinion, calling for vigilance and ethical oversight.
AI, Privacy, and Surveillance: The document emphasizes the need to protect privacy and human dignity in the face of AI-powered surveillance and data collection.
AI and the Protection of Our Common Home: AI can contribute to environmental sustainability but also consumes significant resources, requiring a balanced approach to its use.
AI and Warfare: The document condemns the use of AI in autonomous weapons, which lack moral judgment and pose grave ethical concerns.
AI and Our Relationship with God: The document warns against the temptation to idolize AI or seek fulfillment in technology rather than in communion with God.

VI. Concluding Reflections
The document concludes by calling for a renewed appreciation of human intelligence and wisdom in the age of AI. It emphasizes that true progress is not measured by technological advancements alone but by the extent to which they contribute to human flourishing, justice, and the common good. The Church encourages a "wisdom of the heart" that integrates reason, ethics, and spirituality, guiding the responsible use of AI to promote peace, solidarity, and the integral development of the human person.

Conclusion
The document serves as a comprehensive guide for Catholics and all people of goodwill to navigate the ethical challenges posed by AI. It calls for a human-centred approach to technology, rooted in the Church's rich philosophical and theological tradition, and emphasizes the importance of using AI to serve the common good, protect human dignity, and foster a more just and compassionate world.

Jubilee 2025: A Year of Hope and Renewal

The Catholic Church is preparing to celebrate a momentous occasion: Jubilee 2025, a holy year dedicated to grace, pilgrimage, and spiritual renewal. The proclamation of this holy year was formally made through the papal bull Spes Non Confundit, meaning ‘Hope Does Not Disappoint’. Released by Pope Francis, this document sets the tone for the Jubilee and provides a roadmap for its observance.

The Proclamation of Jubilee 2025
The Jubilee Year will officially commence with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. This act symbolizes Christ as the ‘door’ to salvation and invites the faithful to a journey of spiritual renewal. Pope Francis emphasized that the theme of the Jubilee, “Hope Does Not Disappoint”, is deeply rooted in the Scriptures, particularly in Romans 5:5, which speaks of the hope poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The papal bull also outlines a significant directive: every Catholic cathedral worldwide is to hold a solemn Mass on December 29, 2024. This celebration will mark the local commencement of the Jubilee Year in each diocese, uniting the global Catholic community in a shared spirit of prayer and reflection.

The Tradition of Jubilee Years
A Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church is a special year of grace, forgiveness, and pilgrimage. Traditionally celebrated every 25 years, it offers the faithful opportunities to obtain indulgences, seek reconciliation, and deepen their relationship with God. While ordinary Jubilee Years follow this regular pattern, extraordinary Jubilee Years can be proclaimed to address particular spiritual needs.
For instance, the Year of Mercy in 2016 was an extraordinary jubilee proclaimed by Pope Francis. This jubilee encouraged the Church to focus on God’s mercy and the importance of faith in contemporary times. Jubilee 2025 marks the first ordinary Jubilee of the 21st century, following the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 under Pope St. John Paul II. That year celebrated the dawn of the new millennium and invited the faithful to renew their commitment to Christ.

The Significance of the Holy Door
Central to the Jubilee celebrations is the Holy Door, a door traditionally sealed in major basilicas in Rome and opened only during Jubilee Years. Pilgrims passing through this door, with the proper disposition, can receive a plenary indulgence, a remission of temporal punishment for sins. The opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica by the Pope on December 24, 2024, is a ceremonial act that signifies the start of the Jubilee Year. It is an invitation to all Catholics to walk through the door as a symbolic gesture of entering into a deeper communion with Christ.

The Global Celebration
To emphasize the universal nature of Jubilee 2025, Pope Francis decreed that every Catholic cathedral around the world should celebrate the solemn opening of the Jubilee Year on December 29, 2024. This ensures that the spiritual benefits of the Jubilee are accessible to all Catholics, regardless of their ability to travel to Rome. Cathedrals are encouraged to incorporate local traditions into their celebrations, making the event a vibrant expression of faith across diverse cultures. The Pope’s emphasis on global participation reflects his vision of a Church that is united yet enriched by its diversity.

Opportunities for Spiritual Growth
Jubilee 2025 will also provide ample opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal. Parishes and dioceses are encouraged to organize events such as retreats, missions, and catechesis focused on the theme of hope. Additionally, the sacrament of reconciliation will be emphasized, reminding the faithful of God’s boundless mercy. Pope Francis has urged the faithful to use this time to reflect on their personal and communal journey of faith. He encourages acts of charity and service as concrete expressions of hope and love.

Looking Ahead to Jubilee 2025
As the Catholic Church prepares for Jubilee 2025, the faithful are invited to begin their spiritual preparations. The opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica and the simultaneous celebrations in cathedrals worldwide signal a time of grace and renewal. In his papal bull Spes Non Confundit, Pope Francis calls the Church to embrace hope as a transformative force. This Jubilee is an opportunity to renew our faith, strengthen our commitment to Christ, and unite as a global community of believers. As the Jubilee approaches, let us heed the Pope’s call to journey together in faith and hope, trusting in the God who never disappoints.

The Theme of the 2025 Jubilee Year: “Pilgrims of Hope”
The theme of the 2025 Jubilee Year is “Pilgrims of Hope”, emphasizing the spiritual journey of the faithful as they seek renewal and deepen their relationship with God. This theme invites all Catholics to walk together in faith, guided by the transformative power of hope, particularly in challenging times. The Jubilee encourages unity, acts of charity, and a rediscovery of the joy and grace found in Christ, aligning with the call to be witnesses of hope in the world. Furthermore, the Jubilee is a significant event in the Catholic faith, and is a time of grace when the faithful can ask for a remission of sins. The 2025 Jubilee is intended to be a year of hope for the world, which is currently facing the effects of war, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change.

The Jubilee Logo
The logo for Jubilee 2025 features a dynamic cross at its center, symbolizing Christ as the source of hope and salvation. Surrounding the cross are four stylized human figures embracing each other, representing the unity and universality of the Church. The figures, forming a circle, highlight themes of community, inclusivity, and pilgrimage. A vibrant, multicolored design reflects joy and the diversity of cultures within the global Catholic community. The overall imagery aligns with the Jubilees theme, Spes Non Confundit (Hope Does Not Disappoint), inspiring a shared journey of faith, hope, and renewal.

Summary of Spes Non Confundit - Hope Does Not Disappoint
Spes Non Confundit, the papal bull issued by Pope Francis, formally announces Jubilee 2025 and sets its spiritual tone and framework. Rooted in the scriptural theme of hope from Romans 5:5, the document emphasizes that God’s love, poured into the hearts of the faithful, is the source of unshakable hope that never disappoints.

Key Announcements:

2. Global Participation:
The Pope decrees that every Catholic cathedral worldwide will solemnly mark the Jubilee’s beginning on December 29, 2024, through a special Mass. This ensures that all local communities can actively participate in the grace of the Jubilee.

The Jubilee’s theme, “Hope Does Not Disappoint,” encourages the faithful to embrace hope as a transformative force in their lives, particularly in the face of contemporary challenges. It calls for a renewed trust in God’s promises and a commitment to live out this hope through charity and service.

4. Pilgrimage and Reconciliation:
The papal bull highlights the significance of pilgrimage during the Jubilee Year, encouraging the faithful to journey to Rome or designated holy sites as a sign of spiritual renewal. 5. Call to Renewal:
The Jubilee is presented as a time for deep reflection, conversion, and unity. Catholics are urged to engage in prayer, acts of service, and concrete expressions of hope in their personal and communal lives.

Vision for the Church
Pope Francis envisions Jubilee 2025 as a unifying event that fosters a renewed commitment to Christ, strengthens bonds within the global Church, and inspires the faithful to be bearers of hope in a troubled world. Spes Non Confundit thus lays the foundation for Jubilee 2025 as a holy year of grace, hope, and transformation, inviting all Catholics to embark on a spiritual journey of renewal.

Misericordia et Misera: a Summary

As the Year of Mercy ended, Pope Francis signed an apostolic letter imploring us to continue being merciful, called Misericordia et Misera. The title can be translated as "Mercy and Misery". St. Augustine used this expression to explain the episode of the Gospel in which people wanted to stone an adulterous woman and Jesus forgives her. This letter continues the key themes of Pope Francis, especially that of Mercy.
Pope introduces his theme in the first paragraph: “Mercy cannot become a mere parenthesis in the life of the Church; it constitutes her very existence, through which the profound truths of the Gospel are made manifest and tangible.  Everything is revealed in mercy; everything is resolved in the merciful love of the Father” (MM 1). “Forgiveness is the most visible sign of the Father’s love, which Jesus sought to reveal by his entire life.  Every page of the Gospel is marked by this imperative of a love that loves to the point of forgiveness” (MM 2). From this Francis draws the fact that “none of us has the right to make forgiveness conditional”. For this to be understood well, two distinctions are helpful: first, God puts some limits on forgiveness which we must respect as absolution is not given if someone firmly intends to commit the sin again they are confessing; second, forgiving does not imply giving free reign as an abused woman might forgive her ex-husband yet file a restraining order against him.
“Mercy gives rise to joy, because our hearts are opened to the hope of a new life.” To a technological and sad culture, the Pope offers an antidote: “All who put aside sadness and put on joy will live in God” (MM 3). Pope Francis suggests “pastoral conversion” which is “shaped daily by the renewing force of mercy” (MM 5) as part of the new evangelization. The footnote explains that “pastoral conversion” is a conversion of the Church’s ministry to more openness and outreach.
Pope Francis says, “We are called to celebrate mercy,” and proposes with four ways to do this.
First, “From the beginning to the end of the Eucharistic celebration, mercy constantly appears in the dialogue between the assembly at prayer and the heart of the Father” (MM 5)
Second, “Hearing the word of God” celebrates mercy because, “In the biblical readings, we retrace the history of our salvation through the proclamation of God’s tireless work of mercy” (MM 6)
Third, “The Bible is the great story of the marvels of God’s mercy” (MM 7). In this context he suggests a “Bible Sunday” every year without further details.
Fourth, “The celebration of mercy takes place in a very particular way in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.” Here, “God shows us the way to turn back to him and invites us to experience his closeness anew” (MM 8)
Pope also lists the attributes a priest should have in hearing confessions: “I ask you to be welcoming to all, witnesses of fatherly love whatever the gravity of the sin involved, attentive in helping penitents to reflect on the evil they have done, clear in presenting moral principles, willing to walk patiently beside the faithful on their penitential journey, far-sighted in discerning individual cases and generous in dispensing God’s forgiveness” (MM 10). “No law or precept can prevent God from once more embracing the son who returns to him, admitting that he has done wrong but intending to start his life anew”. (MM 11)
Paragraph 12 extends two dispensations:
First, all priests can forgive the sin of abortion. "Given this need, lest any obstacle arise between the request for reconciliation and God’s forgiveness, I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion. The provision I had made in this regard, limited to the duration of the Extraordinary Holy Year, is hereby extended, notwithstanding anything to the contrary". But at the same time he wants to restate firmly that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. In the same way, however, he states that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father. He exhorts every priest, therefore, be a guide, support and comfort to penitents on their journey of special reconciliation.
The second disposition is extended faculties for confession to the priests of the Society of St. Pius X until further provisions are made.
Pope Francis encourages the mercy of consolation where words of hope reach those in pain. We might suffer pain, “yet God is never far from us at these moments of sadness and trouble” (MM 13). Mercy is interpersonal: “It is an encounter between two hearts: the heart of God who comes to meet us and a human heart.  The latter is warmed and healed by the former” (MM 16).
“The social character of mercy demands that we not simply stand by and do nothing.  It requires us to banish indifference and hypocrisy” (MM 19). He calls for “a culture of mercy” - like John Paul II called for “a culture of life” - which is “based on the rediscovery of encounter with others, a culture in which no one looks at another with indifference or turns away from the suffering of our brothers and sisters.  The works of mercy are ‘handcrafted’, in the sense that none of them is alike” (MM 20). As a conclusion to the Year of Mercy, Francis tells us, “the Jubilee now ends and the Holy Door is closed.  But the door of mercy of our heart continues to remain wide open” (MM 16).

The Need of an Ecological Conversion

Laudato Sí, the second encyclical of Pope Francis, a highly anticipated papal letter, was promulgated on 24th May and was released on 18th June, 2005. In this letter Pope Francis invites the Catholics worldwide and the whole humanity (1) to safeguard the environment and battle climate change as an urgent and top priority of the 21st century. He also invites them for changes in lifestyles and energy consumption to avert the ‘unprecedented destruction of the ecosystem’. The Encyclical takes its name from the invocation of Saint Francis, ‘Laudes Creaturarum’ (Praise of the Creatures). The opening words and the title recall Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron of Ecology. The Pope states that Saint Francis is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically. The conviction of Francis to call everything here on earth as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ cannot be written off as naive romanticism. It reminds us that the earth, our common home, “is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us” (1). The encyclical is divided into six chapters, which include 246 paragraphs and two prayers at the end.

The Present Ecological Crisis
The first chapter, ‘What is Happening to our Common Home’, presents the crisis affecting the environment, saying that the Earth “is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth” (21). The earth and its environment are God’s gift to everyone, and it is destined to all, the present and the future generations. If we analyze the scientific findings available today on the environment, we become painfully aware about what is happening to our common home. Climate change, it goes on to say, is a “global problem with serious implications” that represents “one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day” (25).
It thus deals with several aspects of the present ecological crisis:
Pollution: Some forms of pollution are part of people’s daily experience and this is closely related to people’s throw-away culture. A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system. It creates a vicious circle which aggravates the situation even more, affecting the availability of essential resources like drinking water, energy and agricultural production in warmer regions, and leading to the extinction of part of the planet’s biodiversity.
Water Scarcity: Other indicators of the present situation have to do with the depletion of natural resources. Fresh drinking water is an issue of primary importance, since it is indispensable for human life and for supporting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Loss of Biodiversity: The earth’s resources are also being plundered because of short-sighted approaches to the economy, commerce and production. The loss of forests and woodlands entails the loss of species which may constitute extremely important resources in the future, not only for food but also for curing disease and other uses.
These problems result in the decline of the quality of human life and the breakdown of the societies. In fact, the deterioration of the environment affects the most vulnerable people on the planet and results global inequality. According to this encyclical, to blame population growth, instead of extreme and selective consumerism on the part of some, is one way of refusing to face the issues (50).

Reject the Inappropriate Interpretation of the Scripture
In the second chapter, The Gospel of Creation, the document draws on the ‘wisdom of biblical accounts’. Christians have at times incorrectly interpreted the Scriptures, and we must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in God’s image and given dominion over the earth justifies absolute domination over other creatures (66). With this the Pope articulates the ‘tremendous responsibility’ of humankind for creation, the intimate connection among all creatures and the fact that ‘the natural environment is a collective good, the patrimony of all humanity and the responsibility of everyone’. Furthermore, he says that when we see God reflected in all that exists, “our hearts are moved to praise the Lord for all His creatures and to worship Him in union-with them” (87). In a later section, the document criticizes those who show ‘more zeal’ in protecting other species than in defending human dignity or addressing ‘enormous inequalities in our midst’ (90). The document also notes that Jesus lived in full harmony with creation and that the destiny of all creation is ‘bound up with the mystery of Christ’ (98).

Roots of the Ecological Crisis
The third chapter, ‘The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis’, tries to find the root of the problems of ecological crisis and says that they can be found in technocracy and an excessive self-centeredness of the human beings. It is precisely the mentality of technocratic domination that leads to the destruction of nature and the exploitation of people and the most vulnerable populations. He also reminds us of the urgent need for “a bold cultural revolution”, in which society needs to “slow down and look at reality in a different way” (114). Modernity has been market by an excessive anthropocentrism that actually obstruct ways of strengthening social bonds. It calls instead for responsible stewardship and says failure to acknowledge the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities makes it difficult to recognize that everything is connected (116-117).

An Integral Ecology
The Encyclical proposes an ‘integral ecology’ in the fourth chapter. It suggests an integral ecology as a new paradigm of justice; an ecology which respects our unique place as human beings in this world and our relationship to our surroundings. In fact, nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it (139). It observes that the economic growth tends to produce predictable reactions and certain standardization with the aim of simplifying procedures and reducing costs. This suggests the need for an ‘economic ecology’ capable of appealing to a broader vision of reality. The protection of the environment is in fact ‘an integral part of the development process and cannot be considered in isolation from it’ (141). In the present condition of global society the principle of the common good immediately becomes, logically and inevitably, a summons to solidarity and a preferential option for the poorest. The notion of the common good also extends to future generations (158-159)

Approach and Action
In chapter five, Lines of Approach and Action, the Pope proposes dialogue to achieve a broad consensus on action (188). He says there is an urgent need of a true world political authority to deal with these global problems and that the environment cannot be adequately safeguarded or promoted by market forces (189-190). The encyclical challenges the claim of empirical sciences the command to provide complete explanation of life. “It cannot be maintained that empirical science provides a complete explanation of life, the interplay of all creatures and the whole of reality” (199). Any technical solution which science claims to offer will be powerless to solve the serious problems of our world if humanity loses its compass, if we lose sight of the great motivations which make it possible for us to live in harmony, to make sacrifices and to treat others well (200).

Need of an Ecological Conversion
The sixth chapter of the encyclical is an invitation to everyone for an ecological conversion. Care for nature is part of a lifestyle which includes the capacity for living together and communion. The roots of the cultural crisis are deep, and it is not easy to reshape habits and behaviour. Education and training are the key challenges: change is impossible without motivation and a process of education. All educational sectors are involved, primarily at school, in families, in the media, in catechesis and elsewhere. According to Pope, obsession with a consumerist lifestyle, above all when few people are capable of maintaining it, can only lead to violence and mutual destruction (204). In order to battle this challenge, we have to overcome individualism, and thus we will truly be able to develop a different lifestyle and bring about significant changes in society (208).
The encyclical is concluded with two prayers: The first we can share with all who believe in a God who is the all-powerful Creator, while in the other we Christians ask for inspiration to take up the commitment to creation set before us by the Gospel of Jesus (246).

Concluding Remarks (Personal)
Generally speaking, this encyclical is a reminder of an “urgent necessity to protect our common home … to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development ... (for) humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home”. (13). In that way it is a document of such landmark significance that it may well become one of the most important sources of modern Catholic Social Teaching since its inception with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum in 1891.
It’s all about relationships. As we harm the environment through destruction and abuse, we are damaging the familial relationship which exists in the nature. In doing so, we are damaging our relationship with other humans, particularly those least equipped to defend themselves: the poor and future generations and forgetting our interconnectedness with the earth and with those around and ahead of us who depend on our good stewardship of the gift of creation. It demands love, overflowing with small gestures of mutual care. It makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world. Love for society and commitment to the common good are outstanding expressions of a charity which affects not only relationships between individuals but also macro-relationships, social, economic and political ones. It moves us to devise larger strategies to halt environmental degradation and to encourage a “culture of care” which permeates all of society.
