The Day of the Portiuncula Indulgence - August 2

The Portiuncula Indulgence, also known as the Pardon of Assisi, is a specific plenary indulgence granted by the Catholic Church, with its origins traditionally linked to St. Francis of Assisi in the early 13th century. This indulgence reflects the saint’s profound desire to lead souls to God's mercy.

Understanding Indulgences.
An indulgence is defined as “a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints”. An indulgence can be partial, removing part of the temporal punishment, or plenary, removing all of it. Indulgences may be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased by way of suffrage.

Historical Context
The Church’s practice of granting indulgences grew out of the early‑Christian habit of asking the prayers of martyrs and other holy persons to “shorten” the severe penances imposed for sin. The Baltimore Catechism records that this custom “has been in use in the Church since the time of the apostles” and began with the earnest petitions of the martyrs on behalf of the faithful.
During the first centuries the Church gradually formalised the remission of canonical penances. By the eighth‑century “penitentials” already allowed a lighter penance to be substituted for a harsher one, and the practice of granting indulgences for pilgrimages, almsgiving and other works of charity became common.
The earliest indulgence that can be called an official papal declaration is the plenary indulgence granted by Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont (1095). There the pope proclaimed that anyone who, after a sincere confession, went to Jerusalem to liberate the Church “shall have that journey counted in lieu of all penance.” This papal act expressly remitted the whole temporal punishment attached to the sins of the crusaders, making it the first recorded plenary indulgence issued by the Holy See. Thus, while the spirit of indulgences dates back to apostolic times, the first documented official indulgence, specifically a plenary indulgence, was the 1095 decree of Pope Urban II at Clermont, which linked the remission of penance to the Crusade.

Historical Context of the Portiuncula Indulgence
According to tradition, while praying in the little chapel of Portiuncula, a small church dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels near Assisi, St. Francis of Assisi experienced a vision of Christ and the Virgin Mary. In this vision, he was granted a spiritual favor: that anyone who visited the chapel, repented of their sins, and fulfilled certain conditions could receive a complete pardon from all temporal punishment due to sin. This indulgence was traditionally approved by Pope Honorius III on August 2, 1216. While the historical authenticity of its origin from St. Francis is a subject of some dispute due to a lack of early documentation, its juridical certainty has been affirmed by papal declarations. Pope John XXIII affirmed the annual renewal of this ancient indulgence on August 2, noting its significance for the remission of sins.

Gaining the Portiuncula Indulgence Today
Over time, the Church extended the possibility of gaining this indulgence beyond the original Portiuncula chapel. Today, a plenary indulgence can be obtained on August 2, or on another more suitable day designated by the local ordinary, by devoutly visiting a parish church. This also applies to cathedral churches and co-cathedral churches, even if they are not parochial, and to quasi-parochial churches. During the visit, the faithful must recite the Our Father and the Creed.

To receive a plenary indulgence, including the Portiuncula Indulgence, the faithful must fulfill the following conditions:
  1. Perform the Indulged Work: This involves devoutly visiting a parish church (or other designated church) on August 2 (or the designated day) and reciting the Our Father and the Creed.
  2. Sacramental Confession: Receive the Sacrament of Penance. A single sacramental confession can suffice for gaining multiple plenary indulgences. This condition can be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the indulged work.
  3. Eucharistic Communion: Receive Holy Communion. A single Holy Communion is required for each plenary indulgence gained. It is fitting that this be received on the same day the indulged work is performed, though it can be fulfilled several days before or after.
  4. Prayer for the Intentions of the Supreme Pontiff: This condition is fulfilled by reciting at least one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the Pope's intentions, though any other prayer according to one's piety and devotion towards the Roman Pontiff is also acceptable. This condition is also fittingly fulfilled on the same day as the indulged work.
  5. Complete Detachment from Sin: It is essential to be free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin. If this complete disposition is lacking, or if the required work and the three aforementioned conditions are not met, the indulgence will only be partial.
A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day, except for those in danger of death.
The Portiuncula Indulgence remains a powerful reminder of God’s mercy and the spiritual legacy of St. Francis, inviting the faithful to conversion, prayer, and renewal each year.

Holy Images or Digital Illusions?

A few months ago, I shared the following reflection on social media regarding a noticeable and growing trend: “There is an increasing trend today of using AI-generated images and videos, even within religious circles. Priests, religious, and laypeople often share these as WhatsApp statuses and on social media. Images of Christ, saints, and now Pope Francis and Leo XIV are being widely circulated. While technology can be a tool for devotion, an exaggerated and uncontrolled use may lead to a diminishing sense of the sacred and even the abuse of sacred imagery. Let us use these tools wisely and reverently. Avoid creating and spreading multiple AI-generated images indiscriminately. Sacred representations deserve thoughtful and respectful use”.

I received a variety of responses, some supporting my concerns, others challenging them. This prompted me to explore the matter more deeply and present it in the form of a more structured small article.

My Argument: The unchecked proliferation of AI-generated religious imagery raises theological, spiritual, and cultural concerns.
In what follows, I present some supportive arguments, drawing particularly from Christian tradition, Catholic theology, and the discipline of sacred iconography, to reinforce the need for discernment and reverent use of such images.

1. Sacred Images Are Not Mere Aesthetics, They Are Windows to the Divine
In Christian tradition, especially in Eastern Christianity, icons are not just pictures, they are theological expressions, often called “windows to heaven.” The process of creating an icon (iconography) traditionally involves prayer, fasting, and spiritual discipline. The iconographer is expected to be in a state of grace and reverence. The icon is not merely "produced" but written, to convey divine truth in visual form. The Second Council of Nicaea defended the veneration of holy images, but emphasized their sacred purpose and liturgical context, not casual use or commercialization. St. John of Damascus, in defense of icons wrote: “We do not worship matter, but the Creator of matter...”

2. Excess Leads to Desensitization, A “Saturation of the Sacred”
Overexposure to AI-generated religious images can result in a gradual loss of sensitivity to the sacred. When such images are produced and shared without discernment, what is meant to be holy and set apart may begin to feel common or trivial. This creates a kind of “saturation of values,” where the extraordinary becomes ordinary. In some cases, the sacred may even be reduced to the level of kitsch or visual noise. Christian tradition teaches that sacred art should elevate the soul toward God, not simply attract attention or provoke reactions.

3. Not All Images Are Theologically Sound
AI generates images based on patterns, not doctrinal accuracy or spiritual insight. This can lead to distortions, e.g., unnatural depictions of Christ or saints that do not reflect their biblical, traditional, or historical portrayals. This risks spreading false theology visually, especially to those who are theologically less informed.

4. The Church Values Art as Catechesis
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2502) states: “Sacred art is true and beautiful when its form corresponds to its particular vocation: evoking and glorifying, in faith and adoration, the transcendent mystery of God.” AI art may lack intentionality and spiritual formation, thus failing to serve as a genuine act of worship or catechesis.

5. The Danger of Reducing the Sacred to “Content”
Social media platforms promote quick sharing and constant consumption of visual material. In this fast-paced environment, sacred images can easily lose their depth and meaning. Instead of inspiring prayer and contemplation, they risk becoming mere aesthetic content for likes, shares, and digital trends. This shift reduces holy representations to superficial visuals, detached from their spiritual purpose. We must remember that sacred imagery is meant to lead us to reverence, not just reaction.

6. Respecting the Dignity of the Saints and the Church
Saints and holy figures are not fictional characters to be casually reimagined or stylized for entertainment. Their images hold deep spiritual meaning and are rooted in centuries of tradition and veneration. AI-generated depictions can unintentionally place them in unrealistic, irreverent, or culturally inappropriate settings. This may lead to a loss of reverence and a distortion of their true witness. We are called to portray them with the dignity and respect that befits their holy lives and example.

7. A Call to Discernment and Pastoral Responsibility
Priests, religious, and lay leaders are called to be custodians of the sacred. Digital creativity must be tempered by spiritual sensitivity, ensuring that sacred symbols are used for edification, not trivialization. Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his message for World Communications Day, 2010: "The new digital technologies are not only changing the way we communicate, but communication itself. We must ensure that the digital world reflects Christian values in its language and symbols."

Conclusion
In an age of rapid digital innovation, our engagement with sacred imagery must remain grounded in faith, tradition, and discernment. The ease of creating religious images should not dilute their spiritual depth or theological integrity. As Christians, we are called to approach all representations of the holy with reverence and responsibility. Let our use of technology serve the sacred, not substitute it.

Lent 2025: A Journey of Hope in the Jubilee Year

The Lenten season of 2025 carries a special significance as it coincides with the Jubilee Year, a time of grace and renewal in the life of the Church. In his Lenten message titled “Let Us Journey Together in Hope”, Pope Francis calls the faithful to embrace this season as an opportunity for conversion, solidarity, and deepening trust in God’s promises. The Jubilee’s theme, Pilgrims of Hope, provides a fitting context for the Lenten journey, reminding Christians of their call to walk in faith, together as a community, and with an enduring hope in Christ.

As Pope Francis states in his letter, Lent is a time of journeying, much like the Exodus, where the Israelites travelled from slavery to freedom. He invites believers to reflect on whether they are truly moving forward in their spiritual lives or whether they remain stagnant due to fear, complacency, or attachment to sin. According to the Holy Father, embracing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving allows one to renew their commitment to walk towards Christ, leaving behind everything that hinders their path to holiness. The Pope also highlights the importance of journeying together. He stresses that the Christian life is not meant to be a solitary path but one of communion and solidarity. The Church, he reminds us, is called to walk together in synodality. In his message, he asks believers to examine whether they truly listen to and welcome others, particularly those who are marginalized and suffering. He warns against self-centeredness and exclusion, encouraging a spirit of cooperation, patience, and mutual support.

The first step in this Lenten journey is reflection. Just as Jesus withdrew into the wilderness for forty days, we too are called to enter into silence and prayer. Reflection is not about self-condemnation but about recognizing where we stand in our relationship with God. It is a time to examine our hearts honestly, acknowledging both our strengths and weaknesses. The words of the Psalmist, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), remind us that in moments of stillness, true hope is born. When we take time to reflect, we allow God to reveal Himself more deeply to us, transforming our fears into trust and our doubts into faith.

The journey of Lent also calls us to reconciliation. St. Paul urges us, “Be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20), reminding us that God’s mercy is always greater than our sins. Reconciliation is not merely about confessing sins but about restoring broken relationships, with God, with others, and even within ourselves. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a precious gift that renews our friendship with God, filling us with His grace. Forgiveness, though often difficult, sets us free. Jesus teaches that mercy must be our way of life, inviting us to let go of resentment and embrace healing. True reconciliation brings peace, for it aligns our hearts with the love and mercy of Christ.

Renewal is the fruit of reflection and reconciliation. Lent is not simply about giving up something; it is about taking up a new way of life. Hope is not mere optimism but a firm trust in the promises of God. Renewal means deepening our relationship with Christ through prayer, acts of charity, and a commitment to living the Gospel with greater conviction. Jesus calls us to be witnesses of hope in a world that often struggles with despair. In the Jubilee spirit, we are reminded that Christ makes all things new.

As we walk this Lenten pilgrimage, let us embrace the call to reflect, reconcile, and renew. Lent is not a season of sorrow but of transformation, leading us to the joy of the Resurrection. May we journey with Christ, strengthened by hope, so that we may emerge renewed in faith, love, and trust in the One who is our ultimate hope.

Prayer:
Lord, as we walk this Lenten journey, help us to reflect on Your love, reconcile with You and others, and renew our hearts in hope. May we live as true Pilgrims of Hope, trusting in Your mercy and rejoicing in the promise of the Resurrection. Amen.

10 THINGS THEY DON’T TEACH YOU IN SEMINARY

Seminary is a place of deep formation, equipping future priests with theological knowledge and pastoral training. It prepares them for sacramental ministry, preaching, and shepherding a community. However, priestly life also brings challenges that no classroom can fully capture. Many young priests step into their first assignments with enthusiasm, only to be met with unexpected realities that test their adaptability and wisdom. The title of this article is inspired by John Killinger’s Seven Things They Don’t Teach You in Seminary. However, this article does not discuss the topics covered in his book. The title is simply meant to draw attention and spark curiosity. It does not imply that seminaries fail to address these aspects. In fact, these topics are part of seminary formation. However, the deeper, lived understanding of these realities often comes only through personal experience in ministry. With that in mind, here are ten crucial lessons that every priest must remember in his priestly ministry.

1. Update Your Knowledge
Ordination is not the end of a priest’s education. Theological, pastoral, and social issues continue to evolve, requiring priests to stay informed. Regular reading, attending seminars, and engaging with contemporary issues ensure that a priest remains relevant and well-equipped to guide his people. Intellectual stagnation can lead to pastoral ineffectiveness. Different church documents outline the framework for priestly formation and emphasizes the need for ongoing formation throughout a priest’s life. They state that priests must continually update their intellectual and pastoral formation to remain effective in their ministry. Therefore, the priests are encouraged to engage in regular study, attend formation programs, and stay informed about current issues affecting the Church and society.

2. Homilies: Let Scripture and Personal God Experience Speak
Many young priests today excel in rhetorical techniques, crafting homilies that are engaging, eloquent, and rich with literary references, moral stories, and stylistic flourishes. While such homilies may capture attention and even earn praise from the faithful, they often fail to bring about true conversion of heart. The emotional appeal may be strong, but if the message lacks depth and spiritual authenticity, it risks becoming merely a performance rather than a vehicle for transformation. The ultimate goal of preaching is not just to impress but to inspire a deeper relationship with God.
To achieve this, priests must first cultivate a profound personal experience of God. A homily that flows from genuine faith and personal encounter with the Divine carries an authority that no rhetorical device can match. Rather than relying excessively on external sources, priests should root their preaching in Sacred Scripture and the lives of saints, allowing these to illuminate and guide their message. When the Word of God is proclaimed not just with skill but with conviction and lived experience, it has the power to penetrate hearts, awaken faith, and bring about lasting spiritual renewal.

3. A Clean Church and Sacristy Reflect Reverence
The church is not just a building; it is a sacred space where people come to encounter God. Maintaining cleanliness and order in the church fosters an atmosphere of peace, calmness, and divine presence, helping the faithful pray with greater devotion. A well-kept church does not require extravagant decorations, but it should always be neat and dignified. Regularly removing dust and cobwebs, ensuring that pews and altars are clean, and keeping the surroundings free from litter all contribute to creating a spiritually uplifting environment. Even small details, such as maintaining an organized notice board with updated announcements, show attentiveness and care. If possible, a simple but beautiful garden in the courtyard can add to the sense of serenity, making the church more inviting for prayer and reflection.
The sacristy is where sacred objects and vestments are stored, and it should be treated with the reverence it deserves. A cluttered and disorganized sacristy diminishes the sense of respect for the sacred. Proper storage spaces should be designated for vestments, liturgical books, and vessels, ensuring that everything is arranged neatly and is easily accessible. Cleanliness and order in the sacristy reflect the dignity of the priestly ministry and contribute to the seamless execution of the liturgy. When the sacristy is well-maintained, it allows those serving at the altar to focus on their sacred duties without unnecessary distractions.

4. An Ordered Space Reflects an Ordered Life
A priest’s room or office is often a reflection of his inner life and discipline. Unfortunately, many priests neglect their personal spaces, allowing them to become cluttered, dusty, and disorganized. Books, files, papers, and personal belongings are often scattered without order, creating an environment that lacks both aesthetic beauty and functionality. An untidy and chaotic living or working space can unconsciously affect a priest’s mindset and efficiency, leading to unnecessary distractions and inefficiency in ministry. Keeping one’s room and office neat and well-organized fosters a sense of peace and discipline, which naturally extends to pastoral work. Even if the space is small and lacks luxury, an orderly arrangement can make it more welcoming and dignified. When a priest’s surroundings are clean, it creates a positive impression on visitors and parishioners, reinforcing the message that details matter in ministry. A well-kept space is not just about appearances, it cultivates a structured and intentional way of living, which ultimately strengthens pastoral effectiveness and personal well-being.
A priest’s residence is not merely a private home, it is a place of welcome. Bishops, fellow priests, seminarians, and parishioners may occasionally require accommodation, sometimes at short notice. Having a clean and ready guest room ensures that one is always prepared to receive visitors with warmth and generosity. Hospitality is a vital part of priestly life, and a well-kept space reflects an open heart. A priest who takes care to provide a comfortable and orderly environment for guests embodies the spirit of Christian charity, making others feel at home and valued.

5. Keep your Documents UpToDate
Maintaining up-to-date parish documents is a critical responsibility entrusted to every parish priest, yet it is a duty that many struggle to fulfil consistently. To ensure seamless administration, daily diligence is essential. Parish registers documenting sacraments, the chronicle recording key events, financial audits, land ownership records, tax filings, and bank-related documents all require regular attention and timely updates. By prioritizing this task daily, the priest safeguards the parish’s operational integrity, legal compliance, and historical accuracy. Neglecting these records risks administrative chaos, financial mismanagement, or disputes, whereas consistent upkeep fosters transparency, accountability, and a reliable institutional legacy for future generations.

6. Self-Care and Avoiding Burnout
Priestly ministry is a life of self-sacrifice, but it should not lead to self-destruction. Many priests experience burnout due to excessive workloads, lack of rest, and emotional stress, ultimately affecting their pastoral effectiveness. Taking care of one’s physical health, setting boundaries, and finding time for personal renewal are not signs of weakness but necessities for a sustainable vocation. A priest who neglects his well-being cannot fully serve his people with the energy and joy that ministry demands. Prioritizing self-care ensures that a priest remains physically, emotionally, and spiritually strong to carry out his mission.
Maintaining healthy food habits and engaging in regular physical exercise are not optional but essential aspects of priestly life. Just as prayer sustains the soul, a healthy body enables a priest to serve cheerfully and effectively. Living in areas with extreme climatic conditions requires additional attention to clothing, diet, and healthcare. Ignoring these aspects can lead to unnecessary health issues that could hinder one’s ministry. A well-cared-for priest is better equipped to care for his flock, making self-care not just a personal responsibility but also a pastoral necessity.

7. Evangelizing in the Digital Age
The digitalization of parish documents and administration is no longer optional, it is essential for efficiency and organization. Properly maintaining digital records ensures that parish activities, sacramental registers, and financial accounts are systematic and easily accessible. However, a common issue in many parishes is inconsistency; one parish priest may initiate digitalization efforts, only for his successor to neglect or abandon them, rendering previous work ineffective. Continuity in digital management is crucial for maintaining order and ensuring smooth parish operations. A well-organized digital system not only simplifies administrative tasks but also allows priests to focus more on their pastoral mission.
Beyond administration, digital platforms have become an important mission field. Many, especially the younger generation, engage with faith primarily through online spaces. Priests who utilize social media, websites, and AI-assisted tools can extend their pastoral reach far beyond the physical church walls. Regularly updating the parish’s Facebook or Instagram pages, sharing reels or short videos about parish activities, and using digital tools for communication and evangelization can significantly enhance engagement. While traditional ministry remains vital, embracing digital evangelization ensures that the Church remains relevant and accessible in the modern world.

8. Helping People Through Crisis Situations
Priests are often the first people parishioners turn to in moments of crisis, whether it be grief, addiction, family breakdown, abuse, or suicidal thoughts. While theology provides a moral framework, practical pastoral care is essential in these situations. A priest must know how to listen deeply, offer comfort, and provide guidance without judgment. In moments of loss, such as the death of a parishioner, simply being present with the grieving family and offering necessary assistance can bring immense consolation. Similarly, couples struggling in their marital relationship need not only moral teachings but also patient accompaniment and support.
Compassionate pastoral care extends to all, including those struggling with personal identity, mental health, or societal rejection. People with different sexual orientations or transgender tendencies may seek understanding and guidance from the Church. A priest’s role is not to judge but to be a compassionate presence, helping them find their dignity and worth in God’s love. At times, the best pastoral approach is to refer individuals to professional counsellors or support groups when needed. More than having all the answers, a priest’s greatest gift in crisis situations is being a source of comfort, hope, and understanding.

9. Dealing with Loneliness and Emotional Needs
Mental well-being is just as important as physical health in priestly life. The priesthood, especially for diocesan priests, can often be isolating due to the absence of a personal family and the demanding nature of ministry. Without strong relationships, loneliness can take a toll, leading to emotional exhaustion and, in extreme cases, even despair. In recent times, the Church has witnessed tragic instances of priests and religious taking their own lives, highlighting the urgent need for emotional and psychological support. No priest should feel like he has to carry the burdens of ministry alone.
Building meaningful friendships and maintaining strong bonds with fellow clergy are essential for emotional support and spiritual well-being. Fraternity among priests provides a space for encouragement, understanding, and shared experiences. Friendships of all kinds, whether with peers, mentors, or even those outside the clergy, play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced life. However, maturity in relationships is necessary to ensure that these bonds remain healthy and supportive. A priest who nurtures his emotional well-being through strong and wholesome relationships will be better equipped to serve his people with joy and resilience.

10. Ministering in a Multi-Religious and Secular Society
In today’s world, religious tensions, fundamentalism, and hostility between communities are on the rise. A priest must not allow himself to be influenced by such divisions but must instead be a bridge-builder, promoting harmony and understanding. Pope Francis, in Fratelli Tutti, reminds us of the need for fraternity and dialogue, emphasizing that differences should not lead to enmity but should enrich human relationships. A priest’s role is to foster peace, engage in respectful interfaith dialogue, and help his community see beyond religious barriers to recognize the dignity of every person as a child of God.

Conclusion
Seminary provides the foundation, but real priesthood is learned in the field. While theological knowledge and liturgical training are essential, pastoral ministry demands much more, practical skills, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and deep spiritual maturity. A priest must be not only a preacher and a teacher but also a counsellor, administrator, and leader. He must navigate conflicts, engage with modern technology, care for his well-being, and continuously grow in knowledge. These lessons are often learned the hard way, but awareness of these realities can help priests prepare better for the challenges ahead. Ultimately, priesthood is not about perfection but about faithfulness. Those who embrace these lessons with humility and openness will find themselves not only surviving but thriving in their vocation, serving God’s people with joy and effectiveness.

Valentine’s Day: A Celebration of Defiance More Than Love

February 14 is celebrated as Valentine’s Day, a day often associated with romantic love, flowers, and heartfelt messages. It is a day when people express their love and affection for one another, cherishing the bonds of friendship, family, and romance. However, beyond the modern commercialized notions of love, the origins of this day also tell the story of defiance: a story of defiance against unjust authority, a stand for conscience, and ultimately, martyrdom. Valentine’s Day is not only a celebration of love but also a testament to the courage of those who uphold truth and justice in the face of oppression.

St. Valentine: A Martyr of Conscience
The roots of Valentine’s Day trace back to St. Valentine, a priest in 3rd century Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor, in his ambition to build a powerful military, issued a decree forbidding young men from marrying. Claudius believed that unmarried men made better soldiers, as they had no familial attachments that could deter them from war.

However, St. Valentine found this decree unjust and contrary to God’s will. Marriage, as a sacred covenant, was not something the state could prohibit arbitrarily. Acting against the emperor’s command, Valentine secretly performed Christian marriages, allowing couples to unite in holy matrimony. His defiance was not merely an act of rebellion but a testament to the belief that divine law and moral conscience stand above any unjust human decree.

Defiance in the Name of Truth
Valentine’s actions soon caught the attention of the Roman authorities. He was arrested and brought before Claudius II, who attempted to persuade him to renounce his faith and allegiance to Christian teachings. However, Valentine stood firm in his beliefs. His conscience would not allow him to comply with a command that violated the sanctity of marriage and the freedom of individuals to choose love over duty to the state.

For his refusal to submit, Valentine was sentenced to death. According to tradition, while in prison, he healed the blind daughter of his jailer and left her a note signed, “Your Valentine,” before his execution on February 14, around the year 269 AD. His martyrdom became a powerful symbol of standing against tyranny and upholding the values of faith and justice.

Love and Resistance: The Christian Conscience
St. Valentine’s story is not just about love in the romantic sense but about a love that refuses to bow before oppression. His defiance echoes the call of the Christian conscience: to resist when authorities impose commands that go against the truth and moral law.

Throughout history, the Church has recognized that obedience to God takes precedence over human laws when those laws contradict fundamental moral principles. The apostles themselves proclaimed, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). Valentine’s witness reminds us that love is not merely an emotion but a courageous act of standing for what is right, even at great personal cost.

A Call to Today’s Christians
The story of St. Valentine challenges us to reflect on our own times. When the world demands conformity to unjust ideologies, when governments impose laws that contradict Christian values, when society pressures individuals to compromise their faith, the response of the Christian conscience must be clear: resistance rooted in love.

Just as Valentine’s defiance led to his martyrdom but secured his place in history, those who stand for truth today may face persecution, but they will be remembered and honoured by future generations. True love is not passive—it is an active, bold witness to truth and justice.

Conclusion
Valentine’s Day is more than chocolates and roses, it is a day to remember a man who gave his life for love and righteousness. As we celebrate, let us be inspired by St. Valentine’s courage. Let us love not only in words but in deeds, standing firm in faith when faced with injustice. For when authority demands the unacceptable, love calls us to resist. The future generations will celebrate those who stand for truth, just as we celebrate St. Valentine today.

I. ആമുഖം

III.

Witnessing the Glory of God

Homily for the Second Sunday of Epiphany
(Syro Malabar)

Theme: Witnessing the Glory of God

Readings:

  • John 1:14-18 – “The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory”.
  • Hebrews 3:1-6 – “Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken later”.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today’s readings invite us to reflect on the theme of witnessing the glory of God. We see two remarkable examples of faithful witnesses: John the Baptist, who testified to Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, and Moses, who was faithful in witnessing the works and words of God. Their lives remind us that we too are called to be witnesses of God's glory in the world.

1. John the Baptist: Witness to the Word Made Flesh

In the Gospel of John, we hear that “The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory.” John the Baptist recognized Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). His testimony is a model for us because:

  • He was clear about his mission: John knew that he was not the Messiah but the one sent to prepare the way. He declared, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me” (John 1:15).
  • He pointed others to Christ: John directed his followers to Jesus, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:29).

Like John, we are called to recognize Jesus in our lives and direct others to Him. Our testimony should not focus on ourselves but on the greatness of Christ.

2. Moses: Faithful Witness of God’s Glory

The author of Hebrews reminds us that Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s house, testifying to God’s words and deeds. Moses witnessed God’s glory on Mount Sinai and shared God’s covenant with the people of Israel. His faithfulness in revealing God's will to the Israelites is a profound example of obedience and dedication.

  • He encountered God personally: Moses spoke with God “face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (Exodus 33:11).
  • He brought God’s message to others: Despite the challenges and the people’s resistance, Moses remained faithful in delivering God’s commandments and guiding the Israelites.

Like Moses, we are called to be faithful in our testimony, even when it is challenging. Our faithfulness in small things reflects our commitment to God's mission.

3. Witnessing God’s Glory in Our Lives

Both John and Moses encountered God’s glory and shared it with others. We too are witnesses to God's glory in different ways:

  • Through our personal encounter with Christ: In prayer, the sacraments, and Scripture, we experience the love and grace of God.
  • Through our daily lives: By living with integrity, love, and compassion, we become reflections of Christ’s glory.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta often said, “You may be the only gospel that someone ever reads”. Your life can testify to the presence of God in the world.

Practical Steps to Witness God’s Glory

1.    Deepen your relationship with Christ: Spend time in prayer and Scripture, allowing God’s Word to transform your heart.

2.    Live with integrity: Let your actions align with your faith, so that others see Christ in you.

3.    Proclaim the Gospel in word and deed: Be unafraid to share your faith, both through your words and your loving actions.

Dear friends, John the Baptist and Moses remind us that witnessing to God’s glory requires humility, faithfulness, and courage. As we continue our journey through the season of Epiphany, let us strive to reflect the light of Christ in our lives. May we, like John and Moses, be faithful witnesses of the glory of God, so that others may come to believe and experience the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Let us pray:
“Lord, make us faithful witnesses of your glory. Help us to reflect your love in our words and deeds, and guide us to lead others to you. Amen.”
