The road to Jerusalem narrowed as the caravan moved forward, slowly leaving behind the open hills. Tall trees rose on either side, their branches spreading wide and thick, covering the path above. The light of the sun began to fade beneath the dense canopy, and the air grew cooler and still.

Joseph looked ahead with care. His steps became more alert, his eyes watchful.

After a while he turned slightly toward those walking near him and said in a firm but calm voice, “From here, the path becomes narrow and dark. It is a forest. People call this place the Pass of Choshek, the place of darkness.”

Jesus listened, holding Joseph’s hand.

“We must walk quickly,” Joseph continued. “Do not stop along the way. Stay close together. There are wild animals in these parts… and sometimes men who hide in the shadows to harm travelers.”

There was a quiet seriousness in his tone, especially as he glanced toward Mary and then at Jesus. His grip tightened slightly around the child’s hand.

The caravan moved faster now.

The forest deepened. The sounds of the outside world faded, replaced by the rustling of leaves, the distant cry of unseen creatures, and the steady rhythm of hurried footsteps. Shadows stretched across the path, and the light grew dim.

At times, Jesus slowed down, looking around at the unfamiliar darkness, his eyes drawn to the shapes and movements within the forest. The long journey had begun to tire him.

But each time, Joseph gently but firmly guided him forward, never letting go of his hand.

They had reached nearly halfway through the forest when a faint sound broke through the silence. It was a cry. Soft… weak… almost lost in the wind.

Jesus stopped slightly and turned his head. “Appa… it seems someone is crying.”

Joseph heard it too, but he did not stop. His face remained steady, though his eyes grew more alert. “Keep walking, my son,” he said quietly.

The caravan continued. But the cry came again, this time clearer, though still feeble.

“Appa… there is someone,” Jesus said once more.

Joseph hesitated. His steps slowed, but he did not yet turn. A shadow of concern passed across his face. In such places, cries could be traps. Thieves sometimes used deception to stop travelers. He looked ahead… then to the sides… weighing the risk. Again the cry came, faint, but filled with pain. This time Joseph could not ignore it. He stopped.

Some of the travelers looked at him with surprise. He himself had urged them not to slow down.

Gently, he placed Jesus’ hand into Mary’s hand. “Stay here,” he said softly.

Then, with careful steps, he moved toward the side from where the cry was coming. The ground sloped downward into a shallow hollow. Joseph descended cautiously, his eyes scanning the surroundings. There, lying among the stones, was a man. He was wounded, his clothes torn, his body weak. Nearby lay a donkey, dead, partly eaten by wild animals. It was clear what had happened.

Joseph knelt beside the man and held his hand. The man spoke faintly. He had been traveling with a caravan. They were attacked. In fear, the others had fled, leaving him behind. He could not walk.

By now, a few from the group had come closer, though many remained on the path.

“Joseph,” a voice called from the path, “it is dangerous. We must move on.”

Another traveler leaned in, whispering harshly, “He is a Gentile. He is not of our people.”

Joseph’s hands, already stained with the man’s blood, stilled. The word Gentile hung in the damp air, a centuries-old boundary between “us” and “them.” For a fleeting second, the weight of his own safety and the laws of his youth pulled at him. Joseph looked back at the wounded man, not a stranger, but a fellow creature gasping for breath. The flicker of doubt died. 

He looked up at Jesus, who stood watching with a gaze that saw no difference between people, only a soul in pain.

He met Mary’s eyes; she gave a single, firm nod. That was enough. The boundary was crossed.

He gave the man water. With care, he cleaned and bound his wounds as best as he could. He remained there, waiting, though the danger of the place had not passed. Some travelers left, unwilling to stay longer. A few others remained.

Joseph stayed by the man’s side, but his heart raced with every sound. The minutes felt like hours.

Time passed slowly. The shadows deepened, and the forest grew more silent, yet more threatening. Those who remained began to look around with unease, aware that every moment of delay carried its own danger.

While they stood in anxious silence, it was as if God had sent a ray of hope; a distant caravan slowly came into view, moving in the direction the wounded man had been heading.

Joseph approached them and explained the situation. They agreed to take him with them and care for him.

With quiet gratitude, Joseph said to them, “You are very kind. I have nothing to give you… but you will always have a friend. If you ever pass through Nazareth, do not forget to visit us.”

When the man was finally lifted and taken away, Joseph stood still for a moment, his heart at peace. Then he returned to Mary and Jesus. The journey resumed.

After some time, Jesus looked up and asked, “Appa, why were the others not ready to help him?”

Joseph walked in silence for a few steps before answering. 

“They were afraid, yes,” Joseph continued, “But more than that, their hearts were closed. Where there is no love in the heart, fear takes up all the room.”

He paused, then continued, “But a true human being is one whose heart is open, ready to serve others, even at the cost of life.”

Jesus asked, “Appa, I heard someone say he is a Gentile… what does it mean?”

Joseph said quietly, “People divide themselves by land, by customs, and by beliefs. They forget that before God, all are His children.”

Jesus listened intently. “How does that happen, Appa?” he asked.

Joseph looked ahead, his voice calm but firm. “Our greed, our desire for power, our pride, these create divisions. They lead to hatred, to conflict, to seeing others as strangers or enemies. But in truth, we are all brethren.”

Then he softly recited from the Book of Psalms:

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is

for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

(Psalm 133:1)

They walked on. The forest was still dark, but something within the moment had changed.

After a while, Jesus spoke again, his voice quiet but clear. “Appa… till now this was called the Pass of Choshek, the place of darkness…”

Joseph looked at him.

“…but now,” Jesus continued, “it should be called the Pass of Rachamim, the Pass of compassion; because you have shown us a model of compassion.”

Joseph gazed at the child. There was a quiet firmness in his face, a depth beyond his years. For a moment, Joseph said nothing.

Then he nodded gently. “Yes, my son.”

The path ahead was still shadowed, and the forest had not yet ended. Joseph looked toward the fading light beyond the trees. “Come,” he said softly. “We must walk quickly. We have to cross this forest before sunset.”

Holding Jesus close, with Mary beside them, they moved forward with renewed strength, continuing their journey toward Jerusalem.

The Plateau of Orot (The Road to Jerusalem - Story 4)

By the time the sun began to sink behind the hills, the caravan had reached a rocky plateau. The land rose gently and opened into a wide, stony space marked by scattered boulders and shallow cave-like hollows. It was a familiar resting place for travelers on their way to Jerusalem, and many caravans would stop there for the night.

As darkness settled, small groups of pilgrims gathered and prepared their evening meal. Soon, small fires began to appear across the plateau, one here, another there, until the whole place was dotted with flickering lights. The voices of travelers softened into quiet conversations, and the cool night air carried the scent of burning wood.

After a simple meal, Joseph, Mary, and the child Jesus moved into one of the rocky shelters. Not far from them, a fire burned steadily at the center where many pilgrims had gathered earlier. Its light reached into the cave, casting gentle, shifting shadows along the stone walls.

Jesus lay down between Joseph and Mary. The long day’s journey had wearied them, and Mary soon fell asleep. Joseph, too, began to drift into rest.

Outside, the sounds of the night slowly emerged, the whisper of the wind, the distant movement of animals, the quiet crackling of the fire. The soft glow of the flames flickered across Jesus’ face as he lay awake, watching the light.

After some time, Jesus turned and gently touched Joseph, brushing his head.

“Appa…”

Joseph opened his eyes slowly. “Have you not fallen asleep, my son?”

Jesus shook his head slightly. “No, Appa… I was thinking.”

Joseph looked at him with quiet concern. “What were you thinking about? Try to sleep, my son. Tomorrow we must rise early and continue our journey.”

Jesus turned his eyes again toward the faint light that reached them from outside.

“Appa,” he said softly, “I was thinking… if there were no firelight, we would be afraid in the darkness.”

Joseph followed his gaze and nodded.

“Yes, my son. Fire gives us light in the darkness. It also protects us, from wild animals and from the dangers of the night. That is why travelers always keep a fire burning.”

For a moment, the two remained silent, watching the gentle movement of light.

Then Joseph added, “People have come to call this place the Plateau of Orot, the hill of lights. Because night after night, travelers stop here and keep their fires burning. Even in the darkness, there is always light in this place.”

Jesus listened quietly.

After a pause, Joseph continued in a softer voice, “God is the true light, my son. He guides and protects us when everything around us seems dark.”

He looked toward the distant horizon, as if recalling something from long ago.

“Our forefathers, when they came out of Egypt under Moses, were led by God through the wilderness. By night, He went before them as a pillar of fire, showing them the way.”

The firelight flickered gently between them.

“And when you were born,” Joseph said, his voice filled with quiet wonder, “there was a miraculous light in the sky. It guided shepherds and wise men to the place where you lay.”

Jesus remained still, listening.

Then Joseph softly recited from the Book of Psalms:

“O Lord, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

(Psalm 119:105)

He placed his hand gently near the child.

“We must learn to be like that light in the world,” he added. “To bring light to others when they are in darkness.”

The night grew quieter. The fire outside continued to glow, its light steady and warm.

After a moment, Joseph began to sing softly, his voice low like a lullaby:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Listening to the gentle song, Jesus slowly closed his eyes. The soft glow of the fire still rested upon his face. Before long, he had fallen asleep.

The road to Jerusalem opened into a wide stretch of hillside where the earth was soft and scattered with patches of green. The caravan slowed as the road narrowed between grazing fields. The air carried the faint scent of grass and animals, and from a distance came the low, rhythmic sound of sheep.

A group of shepherds was guiding their flock across the slope. Some walked ahead, calling out in steady voices; others followed behind, keeping the sheep together. The flock moved like a living stream, spreading and gathering as they went.

Jesus watched them closely as he walked beside Joseph. His eyes followed every movement, the way the sheep responded to the shepherds, the way they stayed close to one another. Then something drew his full attention.

One of the shepherds was carrying a sheep across his shoulders.

The sheep lay quietly, its legs resting against the man’s chest, its head leaning gently near his neck. The shepherd walked with care, adjusting his steps so that the sheep would not slip.

Jesus slowed down, still watching.

After a few moments he asked, “Appa, why is that sheep being carried while all the others are walking?”

Joseph looked toward the shepherd and then back at Jesus.

“Sometimes, my son,” he said, “a sheep becomes weak. It may be sick, or injured, or simply too tired to continue the journey. The rest of the flock can go on, but that one cannot.”

They continued walking as the shepherd passed by them, still bearing the sheep patiently.

“A shepherd may have many sheep,” Joseph went on. “If one is left behind, it may not seem like a great loss. But a good shepherd does not think that way. Each one matters to him.”

Jesus listened quietly, his gaze still following the man.

“So he carries it?” he asked softly.

Joseph nodded. “Yes. A true shepherd does not only lead; he also carries.”

For a few steps they walked in silence. Then Joseph added, “This is why people have come to call this place the Pastures of Ro’eh.”

Jesus looked up at him. “Ro’eh?”

“It means ‘shepherd,’” Joseph explained gently. “Here you often see what a shepherd truly is, not only one who guides, but one who cares for the weakest; he is the one who knows each of his sheep by name, searches tirelessly for the single wanderer until it is found, and ultimately lays down his very life to protect the flock from the enemies.”

The word seemed to settle into the moment. Jesus glanced again at the shepherd, now moving slowly along the hillside with the sheep upon his shoulders.

After a while he asked, “Appa… does God also care us like that?”

Joseph’s face grew still, touched by memory.

“Yes, my son,” he said quietly. “When we are weak, or afraid, or unable to go on, the Lord does not leave us behind.”

He paused, then continued, “When you were about to be born, I and your mother Mary faced many troubles. We found no place to stay. Later, we had to journey far from home, into a land we did not know. There were dangers on the road, and nights filled with uncertainty. But through all of it, God guided us. He protected us. He carried us when we could not carry ourselves.”

Then Joseph softly recited from the Book of Psalms:

“O save your people, and bless your heritage;

be their shepherd, and carry them forever.”

(Psalm 28:9)

Jesus walked in silence, holding those words within him.

“So even when someone is weak,” he said slowly, “God will not leave them behind.”

Joseph nodded. “He draws them closer and carries them with care.”

As they moved forward, the voices of the pilgrims began to rise together in song. The melody spread across the hills, gentle and steady:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

he leads me beside still waters;

he restores my soul.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,

I fear no evil; for you are with me.”

And with that song, they continued their journey toward Jerusalem.

Through the Path of Anava (The Road to Jerusalem - Story 2)

The group of pilgrims moved steadily along the winding road toward Jerusalem. The morning sun filtered gently through the trees as the travelers entered a narrow stretch of woodland. Tall trees stood on both sides of the path, their branches spreading wide above the road.

But soon Jesus noticed something unusual. Many of the branches hung very low, bending across the path so that the pilgrims could not walk upright. One by one, the travelers lowered their heads to pass beneath them. Some carefully lifted the branches aside, while others simply bowed and moved forward.

Jesus tried to walk normally, but a branch brushed against his hair. Smiling, he bent down and slipped beneath it. As he walked a little farther, he saw that everyone around him was doing the same.

Looking up at Joseph with curiosity, he asked, “Appa, why are the branches so low here? It’s hard to walk under them.”

Joseph gently held back a branch so that an elderly pilgrim could pass. Then he turned toward Jesus and said quietly, “My son, this place is known as the Path of Anava.”

Jesus repeated the unfamiliar word softly. “Anava… what does it mean, Appa?”

“It means humility,” Joseph explained. “The path itself seems to teach it. See how everyone must bow their heads to continue the journey.”

They both lowered their heads again to pass beneath another branch.

After walking a few steps, Jesus asked thoughtfully, “Appa, must people bow like this to reach God’s city?”

Joseph nodded gently.

“Yes, my son. If we wish to come close to the Lord, we must learn humility. Pride makes a person stand tall before others, but humility helps us recognize that everything we have comes from God.”

For a moment the two walked quietly among the bending branches. Then Joseph softly recited a verse from the Book of Psalms:

“The Lord lifts up the humble, but casts the wicked to the ground.”

(Psalm 147:6)

Jesus listened carefully as the words settled in his heart.

“So, Appa,” he said after a moment, “the road itself is teaching us how to walk before God.”

Joseph smiled: “Yes, my son. Sometimes the path bends us so that our hearts may learn humility. Those who bow before the Lord will one day be lifted up by Him.”

Jesus glanced once more at the branches arching over the path like a quiet gate.

Then he said thoughtfully, “Perhaps the trees themselves are bowing before God, Appa, and they are inviting us to bow with them.”

Joseph nodded gently, and together they continued their journey with the pilgrims toward Jerusalem.

The Valley of Baca (The Road to Jerusalem - Story 1)

The road to Jerusalem wound through rocky hills and quiet valleys. The caravan of pilgrims moved slowly, their sandals stirring little clouds of dust. 

Soon they entered a shaded valley where many tall trees stood close together. Jesus noticed something unusual. Drops of water were slowly running down the bark of the trees, glistening like tears in the soft light.

He touched the trunk of one tree and looked up at Joseph with curiosity.
“Appa, are these trees crying?”
Joseph paused for a moment and gently rested his hand on the rough bark. Then he looked around the valley before answering.
“My son, this place is called the Valley of Baca, meaning the valley of tears.”
Jesus listened carefully as Joseph continued walking beside him.
“The pilgrims who travel to Jerusalem should pass through this valley. Long ago the psalmist spoke about it when he sang to the Lord.”
Joseph then recited softly from the Book of Psalms:
“As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rain also covers it with pools.” (Psalm 84:6)
Jesus looked again at the drops of water sliding down the trees.
After walking a few steps, he asked thoughtfully, “Appa, why must people pass through a valley of tears to go to God’s house?”
Joseph smiled gently, as if the question itself was part of the journey.
“My son, every life has its valleys. People sometimes face sorrow, hardship, and suffering. But those who trust in the Lord do not lose hope. Even their tears can become a blessing.”
He then quoted another line from the Book of Psalms:
“Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy.” (Psalm 126:5)
Jesus walked quietly beside him for a while, thinking about those words. Then he looked again at the shining drops on the trees.
“So, Appa… the tears are not wasted?”
Joseph shook his head gently.
“No, my son. When people carry their suffering with faith, God can turn their tears into joy. The road to God’s city often passes through valleys like this, but the Lord walks with His people.”
Jesus gazed once more at the trees of the valley. The drops of water sparkled in the light.
Then, with a quiet smile, he said, “Perhaps the trees are not only crying, Appa… perhaps they are waiting for joy.”

And the two continued their journey with the pilgrims toward Jerusalem.

The Road to Jerusalem (Introduction)

Every year the people of Israel made their pilgrimage to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover Feast. Families travelled together in groups, walking long distances through hills, valleys, villages, and fields, singing psalms and sharing stories of God’s faithfulness. It was both a journey of faith and a journey of community.

The Holy Family was faithful to this tradition. The Gospel tells us that the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem every year for the feast of Passover (Luke 2:41). From their home in Nazareth, they joined the caravan of pilgrims and walked the long road toward the Holy City, where the Temple stood as the sign of God’s dwelling among His people.

During these journeys the Child Jesus walked beside Joseph, whom he lovingly called “Appa,” a tender word used by children for their father. Like every child, Jesus observed everything with wonder, the mountains, the rivers, the trees, the animals, the people, and the many events that unfolded along the road. His heart was filled with questions.

Joseph, the quiet and faithful guardian of the Holy Family, answered these questions with patience. As a righteous man formed by the Scriptures, he often explained the world through the words of the Psalms. The ancient prayers of Israel became his way of teaching the young Jesus about God, life, suffering, trust, and hope.

The road to Jerusalem was therefore not only a physical journey; it was also a journey of learning and contemplation. The landscapes they crossed became lessons, the encounters along the way became occasions for reflection, and the Psalms gave voice to the deeper meaning of what they saw.

The following stories imagine some of those moments along the pilgrimage road. They portray the curiosity of the Child Jesus and the gentle wisdom of Joseph, who guides him through the ordinary experiences of life while pointing always toward God.

These stories invite the reader to walk with them, to see the world through the eyes of a child, to listen to the wisdom of Scripture, and to discover how every path, even the difficult ones, can lead toward the city of God.
